Relentless get into the art game

A software developer has dived into its pool of creative talent and organised an art exhibition for the Brighton Festival.

Relentless Software, famous for making the Buzz! series of quiz computer games, is displaying paintings, photographs, animations and sculpture, created by 11 members of staff.

Many of the people working for the company, based in Air Street, Brighton, have art backgrounds and it wants to use the exhibition to display their talents.

But project director Stuart Dodman said: "Although we are paying for the space and it will be Relentless branded, this is not a marketing exercise.

"It's just a chance for some of our highly creative staff to express themselves and have fun."

The high quality of the exhibits has already been noted by festival organisers.

A satirical sculpture of a figure made from oil drums has been nominated for the visual arts prize and will later be displayed at the Joogleberry Theatre.

It is the work of Kim Stockton, 22, who joined Relentless after studying 3D design at university.

The 22-year-old, who specialises in environmental design, said: "It was great to do something different.

It's pretty cool to be shortlisted for a cash prize as well.

"It's the first time I have done something like this but it could become a hobby and possibly even a way to earn some extra money, which would be nice."

Not everyone providing the work has a strong art background. Former City College Brighton and Hove student Amy Watson, 21, works at Relentless as a production assistant and is exhibiting a painting on canvas.

She said: "It was a great change from working with spreadsheets and databases all day. I studied art at A-level but is has been about four years since I did a painting like this.

It's great to work for a company that gives you these kinds of opportunities."

Mr Dodman said the idea for the exhibition was one of many designed to improve camaraderie at Relentless.

He said: "As a company we always try to give our staff the opportunity to do stuff outside work. The games industry is highly competitive so it is really important to retain staff - this helps us do so.

"We have got the usual things like a football team and we try to get everyone together on occasions.

"You need to like the people you work with and these events let them get together without having to talk about work."

The Relentless exhibition is at the former Model Zone shop, Imperial Arcade, Brighton, from today until Sunday.
