Albion deals - give some credit
Albion's charge for the play-offs emphasises the benefits of a good scouting system and the shrewd judgement of the man at the helm, Barry Lloyd.
Latest recruit Therry Racon is another player scouted by the Seagulls' former manager.
The groundwork on Charlton's French midfielder had already been done by Lloyd, so Albion were in a position to move quickly once Adam El-Abd was injured at Huddersfield.
On the evidence against Swindon and Nottingham Forest, Racon, signed on loan for the rest of the season, looks a really good addition.
With all due respect to Albion's other recent French captures, the former Marseille youngster comes with a better pedigree.
He has a bit of everything - strong in the tackle, decent in the air, a good engine and a sound range of passing. No wonder Charlton paid more than £400,000 for him.
El-Abd, as well as he has performed as an emergency midfielder, would be the first to admit he is more of a defender.
Racon and Steve Thomson, another Lloyd recruit, have the makings of an effective pairing.
Partnerships are important and Albion now have three strong ones through the spine of the side, with Nicky Forster and Glenn Murray in attack and Tommy Elphick and Joel Lynch at the back.
Lloyd also played a big part in the signing of Murray. Not all of his suggestions have come off. Former Aldershot striker Jonny Dixon is struggling to settle and the closest Irish midfielder Shane McFaul has come to a first-team start was as temporary right-back for the suspended Andrew Whing.
That is the nature of the transfer market - you win some you lose some and Lloyd is certainly in credit at the moment.
The home-grown pairing of Elphick and Lynch could develop into Albion's Vidic and Ferdinand.
Elphick, tossed the armband at Nottingham Forest after Thomson and Forster had been substituted, is a captain in the making.
He is a traditional centre-half, dovetailing nicely with the talented Lynch, who is more of a modern day defender.

lloyd has been impressive and I have no doubts he is going to be useful. But some credit must surely go to Wilkins, i HOPE that lloyd is suggesting several players and wilkins is having to choose.

Barry Lloyd was one of the better manangers this club has ever had so we shouldn't be surprised. BL was an excellent appointment as chief scout. He knows football.

Did anyone really expect an immediate impact from Jonny Dixon? He has joined from non-league and it is going to take a while to settle down with more training and nex team mates. I suspect we won't see much/anything of him until next season, when he has some games (friendlies) under his belt and a pre-season training. It can't be easy with so many reserve fixtures falling victim to the weather.
I had a feeling that McFaul was in effect an extended trial to avoid losing him to other teams. I wait with interest to see if he has impressed enough in training to get a short term contract next season.

Whilst I don't deny that he has found some good players, I agree with Uncle C on this one...Lloyd marked the beginning of the downfall of this club and it should never be forgotten!

This unfortunatley was the start of the time the club was going downhill due to bad ownership not necessarily bad management from Bazza!!

Mine for example included watching my first ever game at the Goldstone in 1986 and then regularly during the late 80s. Those were pretty good days in my memory - The last game of the season in 87/88 against Bristol Rovers, there were about 20 000 to watch us get promoted under mr Lloyd's stewardship. What a day that was. Say what you like, Barry's one of the best managers we've had during my life time.

And Steve Gatting, Kevin Bremner, Robert Codner! There were so many legends. We gave Arsenal a good game in the 3rd round of the cup too.

Barry Lloyd may not be the greatest manager in the club's history (step forward Alan Mullery, first spell), but he is certainly a much better chief scout than Dean White. I wouldn't suggest changing it 7/9/10 games before the end of the season, but the KFC Kid is surely on borrowed time now. Hopefully he will return to Hastings in the summer.

put together an entertaining side who could pass the ball and who took us to within 90

Whilst at the time there was some dissillusionment with BL, hindsight shows he was working with his hands tied behind his back. Garry Nelson had a great season when we were promoted and we were never expecting to get to the play-offs a couple of years later(if the ref had correctly given a goal kick instead of a corner then Notts County may never have scored their first goal and our history may have taken a different turn). It would seem that Rob is the one who knows nothing of the club. To suggest the rot set in with BL ignores all the financial mismanagement by M Bamber and the downward spiral from then. Great times under Mullery/Bamber but at what cost?

Ah ... Sergey Gotsmanov. I seem to remember him sitting on the ball on the goal-line. Whatever happened to him? I seem to recall him being filched by Southampton? Those were happy days at the Goldstone and Barry Lloyd certainly had an eye for a player then.

Drew, you have drawn attention to the situation which has continued since Barry Lloyd, all subsequent managers had to struggle with their hands tied behind their backs,thats why we are in Div 1, with decreasing gates.
If people like Coppell,Taylor and Mcgee etc had been backed by a Board with real cash we would still be in the Championship

to say he has done well as ascout is not true, signing loan players from higher clubs is not that hard, as for the players on contract, its mcfaul dixon, thompson, and murray. of those only 1 has really shown us he was a good buy, one out of 4 is not that great.

I am sure that if Knight and Co made it clear that in view of the lack of cash they would make way for someone with the required finance it would happen.
There was the possibility that if the Birmingham buyout had succeed then Gold would have been more than interested,however he received no encouragement from our Board
